Determination of setting pressure of safety valve and deviation of setting pressure
The set pressure refers to the preset pressure when the safety valve disc starts to open under the operating conditions, and it is the gauge pressure measured at the valve inlet. Under this pressure, under the specified operating conditions, the force generated by the medium pressure to open the valve is balanced with the force to keep the disc on the válvula. Under this pressure, there is a measurable opening height, and the medium is in a continuous emission state that can be perceived by vision or hearing.

- B. The setting pressure of the safety valve of the economizer, reheater and once through boiler start-up separator is 1.1 times of the working pressure of the installation site.
- C. Setting pressure deviation: ± 0.015MPa when the setting pressure is less than or equal to 0.5MPa, ± 3% when the setting pressure is 0.5-2.3mpa, ± 0.07MPa when the setting pressure is 2.3-7.0mpa, ± 1% when the setting pressure is greater than 7.0Mpa.
Table 1 setting pressure of safety valve on drum (shell) and Superheater
Rated working pressure(MPa) |

Note: There must be a safety valve on the boiler, which shall be adjusted according to the lower set pressure in the table. For the boiler with superheater, the safety valve adjusted according to the lower pressure must be the safety valve on the superheater to ensure that the safety valve on the superheater is opened first. The working pressure in the table refers to the working pressure at impulse outlet for pulse type safety valve and the working pressure at safety valve device location for other types of safety valve.
(2). Safety valve for hot water boiler
- A. Set pressure of safety valve shall be in accordance with table 2.
- B. Setting pressure deviation: ± 0.015MPa when the setting pressure is less than or equal to 0.5MPa, ± 3% when the setting pressure is greater than 0.5MPa.
Table 2
Setting pressure of safety valve for hot water boiler(MPa) |
1.12 times of working pressure but not less than working pressure + 0.07MPa |
1.14 times of working pressure but not less than working pressure + 0.10MPa |
Note: There must be a safety valve on the boiler to adjust according to the lower set pressure in the table. The working pressure here refers to the working pressure of the components directly connected with the safety valve.
(3). Safety valve for stationary pressure vessel

When only one safety valve is installed on the fixed pressure vessel, the setting pressure of the safety valve shall not be greater than the design pressure of the pressure vessel; when multiple safety valves are installed on the fixed pressure vessel, the setting pressure of one safety valve shall not be greater than the design pressure of the pressure vessel, and the setting pressure of the remaining safety valve can be increased appropriately, but shall not exceed 1.05 times of the design pressure.
- B. Setting pressure deviation: ± 0.015MPa when the setting pressure is less than or equal to 0.5MPa, ± 3% when the setting pressure is greater than 0.5MPa.
(4). Safety valve for mobile pressure vessel
- A. The setting pressure of the safety valve shall be 1.05-1.10 times of the design pressure of the tank body, the reseating pressure shall not be less than 0.8 times of the opening pressure, and the setting pressure of the safety valve of the cryogenic tank car shall not exceed the design pressure of the tank body.
- B. Setting pressure deviation: ± 0.015MPa when the setting pressure is less than or equal to 0.5MPa, ± 3% when the setting pressure is greater than 0.5MPa.
(5). Safety valve for pressure pipeline
- A. The setting pressure of safety valve for industrial metal pipeline is 1.05-1.1 times of the maximum working pressure; the setting pressure of safety valve for oil and gas station pipeline is 1.05-1.15 times of the maximum working pressure.
- B. Setting pressure deviation: ± 0.015MPa when the setting pressure is less than or equal to 0.5MPa, ± 3% when the setting pressure is greater than 0.5MPa.
(6). Safety valve for medical hyperbaric oxygen chamber
- A. The setting pressure of the safety valve is the maximum working pressure + 0.02 MPa.
- B. The set pressure deviation is ± 0.015MPa.
(7). Safety valve for compressor
- A. The setting pressure of the safety valve is the maximum working pressure + 0.02 MPa.
- B. Setting pressure deviation: ± 0.015MPa when the setting pressure is less than or equal to 0.5MPa, ± 3% when the setting pressure is greater than 0.5MPa.

What is Safety Valve?
Safety Valve is a type of valve that automatically actuates when the pressure of inlet side of thevalve increases to a predetermined pressure, to open the valve disc and discharge the fluid (steam or gas ) ; and when the pressure decreases to the prescribed value, to close the valvedisc again.
How many types of safety valves are there?
This type of safety valve uses the flowing medium itself, through a pilot valve, to apply the closing force on the safety valve disc. The pilot valve is itself a small safety valve. There are two basic types of pilot operated safety valve, namely, the diaphragm and piston type.
What is the difference between a safety valve and a relief valve?
The basic difference between a safety & relief valve:
A relief valve relieves the pressure by relieving the fluid back into the system, to the low pressure side – eg. the relief valves of a positive displacement pump.
A safety valve , on the other hand, relieves the pressure into the atmosphere i.e. out of the system.
Relief valve releases pressure when it going to exceed, valve opens gradually if the pressure increased gradually.
Safety valve describe the relief device on pressurised fluid vessels. When set pressure of valve reached then valve opens almost fully.
The difference is generally in capacity and setpoint. A relief valve is ment to relieve pressure to prevent an over pressure condition.
A relief valve may have an operator on it to assist in opening the valve in response to a control signal.
A safety valve is ment to relieve pressure without operator assistance.
e.g. a thermal relief valveis used to bleed off pressure in a heat exchanger if the heat exchanger is isolated but the possibility of thermal expansion of the fluid could cause over pressure conditions.
e.g.safey valve on a boiler or other types of fired pressure vessels must be capable of removing more energy that is possible to be put into the vessel.
What is the purpose of safety valve?
Purpose and function of safety valves. The primary purpose of a safety valve is the protection of life, property and environment. A safety valve is designed to open and relieve excess pressure from vessels or equipment and to reclose and prevent the further release of fluid after normal conditions have been restored.
What is blowdown in safety valve?
Blowdown is the difference between set pressure and reseating pressure of a safety valve expressed as a percentage of set pressure. Typical blowdown values as defined in codes and standards are -7% and -10%, ranging from -4% to -20% depending on the code and service (steam, gas or liquid).
